Choice POS App

The native Choice POS App was a large part of the Choice omni-channel provided to our merchants. With the Choice POS App, merchants have a mobile POS that can go with them or their employees anywhere  so they always have access to all the tools and features of their POS system. This also includes the ability to see and access their business portal on-the-go without ever having to pull out their computer to do basic tasks such as viewing their dashboard, statements, deposits, and creating support tickets.

Choice POS App Details

When I joined the team, the POS app already existed but it was only an MVP version and was still in our old branding. For this project the ask was to incorporate some of the other tools that we were offering to merchants in our Desktop business portal into our Choice POS App for ease of use.

We were focused on accomplishing 3 things.

  • Creating a mobile app design of the business portal and incorporating it into our existing app.

  • Rebranding the app with our new branding which included redesigning the main nav and POS nav screens.

  • Making the app customizable based on roles. A business owner could easily access the business portal but the employees would only have access to the POS.

Team:
  • I was the lead designer on this project.

Process:
  • 2 week sprints

  • Bi-weekly reviews

Features:
  • Full POS capabilities

  • Full Business Portal Access

  • Customizable options based on user roles

Solution

As usual in the fast-paced start up environment we were working in, there wasn’t much time for research and user testing. But I did take some time researching other apps, layouts, and navigation structures, as well as leveraging the research done by the previous designer of the original app and business portal. We also took information from customer service and open tickets on some of the issues and pain points customers were having in order to design a better experience for our current and future users.

POS Sketches

Initial steps began with basic sketches to explore the mobile app design of the business portal. Then building out a flow chart to have a basic structure to work off and make sure we were account for all screens and steps.

One of the first needs we had was allowing users to customize their app based off of their roles and needs. For example, a business owner may want to immediately access their Business Portal Dashboard when they log in whereas Employees may need direct and quick access to the POS. We created this step for users where they can select their preference the first time they login to the app. If they want to change their home screen preference, they can do so within the app settings as seen here.

We also redesigned the navigation of the app to make it easier to move through and access the different sections as needed. This app was a native app, so we designed complete flows for iOS and Android.

One of the most important features of the business portal and a feature that people wanted  to have quick access to from anywhere was the Business Portal Dashboard.  So we created a mobile version of the existing Business Portal Dashboard and made sure that users would still easily be able to navigate and customize their dashboard, and quickly access the data that matters to them.

Dashboard

One of the changes that we had to adjust for was how to give users the same filter capabilities that they had on desktop without over complicating their experience as following their mental model within the styles of the HIG and Google Material. I did a lot of research of standard principles as well as looked at how other successful apps were handling these situations. We decided to simplify our date picker but still give them more options so they could filter their information as needed.
